Responsible Business Forum on Food and Agriculture 2015

From 23rd to 24th June, 2015, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) of Vietnam and the Global Initiatives in partnership with the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) co-organized the “Responsible Business Forum on Food and Agriculture (RBF) 2015” in Hanoi. The Forum was attended by around 350 delegates from ASEAN governments, international businesses, financial institutions and agricultural associations, to help shape a more sustainable future for food and agriculture in the ASEAN region.

In his opening speech, Mr. Le Quoc Doanh, Deputy Minister of MARD called for a more effective collaboration between ASEAN governments, businesses and civil society organizations for sustainable agricultural development.

Mr. Vu Tien Loc, Chairman and President of VCCI emphasized the importance of transformational changes to the existent farming and agricultural systems as critical solutions to food security challenges. He said: “We need to find new ways that help increase agricultural products quality and yield, improve rural livelihood, while reducing food loss and environmental impacts of farming practices. In other words, we need a paradigm shift towards sustainable agriculture”. Mr. Loc further shared the fact that, there are not many Vietnamese companies operating in agriculture sector, and those who invest in sustainable agriculture are even lesser. He expressed his confidence that the Forum will significantly help promote the active participation of Vietnamese businesses in sustainable agricultural development.

Mr. Tony Gourlay, CEO of Global Initiatives said: “This two-day forum takes place at a crucial time for global action on climate change and water scarcity, and in a region which significantly affects world food security. We have carefully selected key global decision-makers as the speakers and supporters of RBF Hanoi to facilitate productive discussions on food and agriculture”.

Under the theme: “ASEAN Beyond 2015: Collaboration for equitable growth”, participants at RBF 2015 discussed and produced actionable recommendations for successful public-private partnership, increasing the global supply of sustainably produced commodities, while improving farmer livelihoods and reducing environmental impacts.

The forum provided a great networking opportunity for participants to meet international sustainability leaders and business peers, and to learn the very latest in responsible and sustainable business strategies and practices.
