Calendar event on How is chemical management assured in your supply chain? in Hanoi and HCMC.

People, regardless who they are, show more and more concern of chemical safety of products they buy.  They now use a very strong tool to access information, that is called Internet. Manufacturers also recognize this new trend and have made progress in providing such information to customers. However, could manufacturers and even retailers keep chemical management in their supply chain under control to ensure accuracy of chemical ingredients announced?

Those issues will be discussed by participants, keynote speakers and businessmen during the CSR Calendar Forum on Environment: HOW IS CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT ASSURED IN YOUR SUPPLY CHAIN? held on 07th October 2015 in Ho Chi Minh city and on 09 October 2015 in Hanoi.

The activity is held under the framework of project “From Global Compact to Local Impact! - Promotion of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) among Vietnamese Business Community for Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP)”, a joint initiative of the Office for Business Sustainable Development (SDforB) at the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), funded by the UN One Plan Fund (OPF). The project also aims for synergies with the EU funded Switch Asia policy module on the development of a national SCP action plan lead by UNEP as well as with the UN Global Compact Vietnam Network under VCCI-SDforB.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, Deputy Secretary General, member of the Standing Committee of VCCI, and Representative of GCNV informed, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have just been announced at the end of September in New York. These 17 goals are considered as a roadmap for the world for poverty elimination, gender inequality fighting and climate change adaption in upcoming 15 years, until 2030. SDGs explicitly call on all businesses to apply their creativity and innovation to solving sustainable development challenges in every part of the world, while their predecessor Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) only focused on developing countries. VCCI, as representative of business community, actively supports SDGs and wishes to cooperate with enterprises and organizations in information sharing, consultancy, training and planning of new models to achieve those goals. The initiative of CSR project is a particular effort of VCCI and its partners in leading enterprises to SDGs.

As a representative of UNIDO and CSR Project, Mr. Florian Beranek - Lead Expert Social Responsibility of UNIDO stated that in Environment subject, business impacts are always mentioned. Chemical management recently attracts attention of people, whoever they are. Scientifically, everything in the world is created by chemical recipes. One tiny changes in such formula would turn things into different materials in positive or negative ways. Thus, the role of chemical management becomes important. Stories and examples of accidents caused by chemical management are various, and most come from one reason: lack of transparency. No information of inadequate information of chemicals is a form of lack of transparency. The lack of transparency would be the root of other problems as well.

As a keynote speaker, Ms. Nguyen Le Hang- Expert from Vietnam Cleaner Production Centre- presented the need for having a sound chemical management system based on life cycle assessment (LCA) of product analysis. She also provided some chemical management methods developed by GIZ and other organizations.

In the afternoon session, participants were divided into 3 groups with 3 different  items. Their task was to develop their own chemical control program. The session ended with great discussion, questions and group presentations.

This is counted as the 30 and 31st CSR Calendar Forum and serves as a platform for enterprises to join multi-stakeholder dialogues to raise awareness of 6 core subjects of CSR based on ISO26000 and 10 principles of UNGC. The project, besides series of Calendar Fora, also welcomes enterprises to in-class and in-house CSR training courses.
