Workshop on Responsible Business: “Trusting each other means growing together”

In the context of growing economy in Vietnam, new Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) are expected to create a strong wave of integration for the whole economy. Since Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) is being put under existence question, the EU-Vietnam FTA (EVFTA) emerges as the biggest hope for the country. Currently it is promising to bring in loads of opportunities and high feasibility as European investors present in 51/63 provinces of Vietnam.

So what do Vietnamese enterprises prepare for this? Will advantages and opportunities be caught and taken? What are expectations of Vietnamese and European business community? EVTFA has been widely announced although many feedbacks claim its complexity and illegitimate answer for the question “How to do business with Europeans?” Apart from technical and legal requirements, responsible business conduct is emphasized as fundamental issue for successful trade and exchange in EVFTA.

The workshop “Trusting each other means growing together” aims for sharing expectations of Vietnamese and European enterprises when EVFTA is coming into effect very soon. This is also a chance for businesses to find a suitable model towards responsible business and trust building with partners. Series of this event were co-organized by CSR Project and VCCI Branches in Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa in 8, 9, 21 and 23 June 2017.

Our keynote speaker Mr. Florian Beranek briefed the audience the content of EVFTA and focused on technical and non-technical requirements of this agreement. For technical part, there is no doubt that businesses should take careful consideration and study of EVFTA. However, non-technical part of EVFTA needs more attention to pay on as it requires responsible conduct of enterprises during EVFTA implementation in the future.

A representative from Deep C Industrial Zone located in Hai Phong also shared their view points on EVFTA as well as their experiences in doing business in Vietnam in 3 years so far.

VCCI representative presented the results of the survey conducted by VCCI in 2016 on how ready the Vietnamese business community is for new generation FTAs including EVFTA one as well as some key opportunities and challenges that businesses have identified in the survey. Besides, she introduced to the audience what Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) has been doing so far on EVFTA and useful links of VCCI on all EVFTA related issues.

Apart form presentations, workshop participants were divided into 2 groups where they discussed and notified their own trust chain with the aim to more understand the sustainable supply chain.
